DC’s Fandome dropped a bunch of trailers on us and one stands out as an exciting first glimpse at the follow up to Batman Arkham Knight called “Gotham Knights”.
In the 2 minute trailer, we are introduced to the hero’s of the game, Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and Robin. After the events of Batman Arkham Knight, Batman has died and in the process set off explosives to destroy the Batcave. The Caped Crusader always has a plan and thus has left instructions to his successors to take up the mantle and protect Gotham.
Penguin opens the trailer with a monologue explaining to Dick Grayson as Nightwing, the history of the antagonist of the game, The sinister “Court of Owls”.
Who are the Court of Owls in Gotham Knights
This organized crime group are a secret society made up of many wealthy Gothamites. The group have existed secretly since colonial times in Gotham City as they use murder and political influence to manipulate the city to their will.
There is a nursery rhyme that has been passed down through generations that describes them.
Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time,
Ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime.
They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed.
Speak not a whispered word about them, or they’ll send the Talon for your head.
The link to Nightwing in the comics is very much associated with the fact that the group kidnap child circus performers and transform them into lethal assassins called Talons so expect to take on these unstoppable fighters as part of the game. As a child, Dick was set for selection into the Court of Owls before the series of events was put in motion and he instead became the ward of Bruce Wayne.
We also see Batgirl wearing one of the masks of the organisation and questions are being asked as to how she has the ability to walk. In the Arkham series, she was in a wheelchair after a horrendous attack by the Joker. But here she is shown back on her feet and fighting crime as the acrobatic Batgirl. Hopefully, the game explains this change to the character, but even if it doesn’t we are glad to have Barbara back to her old ways as a strong and intelligent crimefigher.
The announcement trailer released back in August showed us more of the likely differences between each character in the game. Showing Batgirls gliding action using her cape, while Robin seems to be teleporting and Nightwing has fast acrobatics. Red Hood seems to be a larger more menacing figure and unlike the rest of the bat family wields guns.
The Gotham Knights Video Game is being developed by the team at WB Games Montreal who previously worked on Batman: Arkham Origins. We know the game is described as an action role-playing game and is said to feature both single and co-op play so get ready to take on the bad guys with a buddy online.
The footage shows the Batcycle in use but no word yet on if it will play as big a role as the Bat Mobile did in Arkham Knight. The famous car in that game was treated as almost its own character to play and changed the dynamic of the interaction with the city compared to previous titles.
As the Batcave is destroyed players will instead use the “Belfry” as the base of operations. It’s from here you can switch characters and load out for your next missions.
Commissioner Gordon is also dead in this game, with a statue of his likeness shown in the new story trailer. Instead, it’s expected that your link to the Gotham City Police Department will be Rene Montoya who has had some powerful storylines throughout the comics.
The game is set for a 2022 release.
