It hasn’t been an outstanding year for Xbox exclusives, but that doesn’t stop the Game Pass subscription service continues to be the best value service available, spreading your games to your PC and cloud gaming and giving you day-one releases essentially for free.
Some of our favourite games released this year on an Xbox console include:
10: Evil West
In this third-person shooter, you play as Jesse Rentier, a vampire hunter in an alternative old west where monsters are real. Equipped with powerful firearms including a six-shot pistol, a rifle and a flamethrower as well as melee weapons like a gauntlet that can accumulate electrical energy and an axe Jesse dispatches his enemies in fun and sometimes gory ways. The campaign can be played cooperatively with another player giving it a new dimension.
09: Cult of the Lamb
Start your own cult in a land of false prophets, venturing out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland worshippers and spread your Word to become the one true cult. This roguelike game was developed by Aussie (and UK) game studio Massive Monster, massive shout out to them for their outstanding achievement with Cult of the Lamb.
08: FIFA 23
This will be the last Fifa game that EA Sports produce as they move away from the FIFA brand and instead create EA Sports Football next year. You generally know what you are going to get in a sports game, slightly better graphics and gameplay than last year and a few new features, like choosing an actual manager as your avatar and the Hypermotion 2 action replays. The addition of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar makes this relevant and fun to play as you try to get your country through for ultimate glory.
07: Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2 is the multiplayer first-person shooter by Blizzard Entertainment. This free-to-play, team-based action game is set in the future, where every match is the ultimate 5v5 battlefield brawl. Play as a time-jumping freedom fighter, a beat-dropping battlefield DJ, or one of over 30 other unique heroes as you battle it out around the globe.
06: Gotham Knights
Batman is dead and it’s up to the Batman Family made up of Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin to protect Gotham. From solving mysteries that connect the darkest chapters in the city’s history to defeating notorious villains in epic confrontations, you must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save the streets from descending into chaos. This “Arkham-like” game got mixed reviews but is a solid and fun superhero story with some epic gameplay.
05: A Plague Tale Requiem
A Plague Tale: Requiem is the sequel to the award-winning adventure, A Plague Tale: Innocence. That picks up the story after Amicia and Hugo escape their devastated homeland, and travel far south, to new regions and vibrant cities. There, they attempt to start a new life and control Hugo’s curse.
04: Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
This Borderlands spin-off was one of my favourite releases this year, blending the action and humour of the Borderlands series with a Dungeons and Dragons parody. It’s been years since I’ve played D&D but the game brought memories flooding back in. The surprise voice cast includes Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, Wanda Sykes and Ashly Burch as Tiny Tina.
03: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
This is COD back doing what it does best, with impressive visuals and see’s the franchise return to the top of the pile after some lacklustre outings. Fight alongside iconic team Task Force 141 and dive into the multiplayer that includes the new Call of Duty Warzone 2.
02: The Callisto Protocol
In the year 2320, Jacob Lee is trapped in a maximum-security penitentiary located on Jupiter’s dead moon, Callisto. Soon after his arrival, Black Iron descends into chaos as inmates begin transforming into terrifying creatures. Jacob must confront these grotesque foes using a unique arsenal of weapons and abilities as he searches for a way to escape. As he navigates the darkness and desolation of Callisto, he also grapples with the unsettling questions at the back of his mind: What mystery is unfolding at Black Iron, and what role is he really playing in it? From the Creator of Dead Space comes not a “clone” but something that is “Dead Space Adjacent”.
01: Elden Ring
This mega-hit was developed by FromSoftware Inc. and produced by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc and is a fantasy action RPG and FromSoftware’s largest game to date, set within a world full of mystery and peril (lots of peril), be prepared to die a lot. The stunning design will leave you in awe and the gameplay mechanics are superb which is why it’s topped many lists as a Game of the Year.
A lot of these titles were also available on other systems but the future is bright for Xbox consoles with a new Fable game announced as well as The Outer Worlds 2, Redfall, Starfield and more.
