Strauss Zelnick recently sat down for a video interview with Bloomberg to discuss the highly anticipated release of “Grand Theft Auto VI.”
While “Grand Theft Auto V” launched just five years after its predecessor, the sixth installment is arriving a staggering twelve years later. When asked why the development process has taken so long, Strauss explained:
“Creating massive, immersive experiences takes time. Rockstar Games strives for perfection, and perfection sets an incredibly high bar.”
He also emphasized the importance of building anticipation as a key strategy, which is why Take-Two avoids releasing frequent installments of its franchises, with the exception of its sports titles.
Zelnick, who began his career in the film industry, noted that promoting a game like “Grand Theft Auto VI” is comparable to marketing a major Hollywood blockbuster. It involves traditional methods like TV spots, outdoor advertising, and brand partnerships, alongside a strong focus on social media. Interestingly, he highlighted that the company avoids expensive campaigns like Super Bowl ads, choosing instead to create excitement through other channels.
As for the million-dollar question, when will “Grand Theft Auto VI” finally be released? Zelnick confirmed that Rockstar has no plans to announce an exact release date far in advance. Instead, the company aims to keep the marketing cycle short, announcing details closer to the launch window, currently projected for the US Fall 2025. This approach balances anticipation with excitement while keeping competitors guessing.
“The anticipation for this title may be the greatest I’ve ever seen for any entertainment property,” Zelnick said. “I’ve been in this industry a long time, across every form of entertainment. We’ve learned that starting the marketing closer to the release helps amplify excitement while avoiding the pitfalls of unmet expectations. It’s not always perfect, but that’s what we aim for.”
Rockstar Games released the first trailer for “Grand Theft Auto VI” in December 2023 but has remained silent since, aside from reaffirming the Fall 2025 release target.
Meanwhile, rival companies appear to be holding back their own Fall 2025 announcements, waiting for Rockstar to make its move before committing to any dates which is fair enough, this game will be huge, but also if history tells us anything GTA VI won’t be released in 2025.
