Top 5 Games of the Viral Outbreak

By now we’ve all heard the warnings around “coronavirus” (or COVID-19 as they want to call it now). Thousands have been asked by Doctors to “self-isolate” and we have all been asked to refrain from kissing and shaking hands when meeting people and instead go for an “elbow-tap”. What the hell is an elbow-tap? and if it’s between that and self isolation then you’ll find me in a locked room playing video games.

While you are in that room, you may as well take your mind off your isolation with some of the best video games ever made that just happen to fall under the genre of “viral outbreak”.

Well.. cause this is Australia and we love to find comedy in irony.

So here are the top 5 games for the viral outbreak.. after a bit of fun.

Ok, now to the list.

Number 5: Plague Inc.

A strategy-simulation game in which the player indirectly controls a plague which has infected patient zero. Now you must bring about the end of human history by evolving a deadly, global Plague whilst adapting against everything humanity can do to defend itself. A strange and controversial game where you are the bad guy. Youtubers have been playing the game as a silly attempt to predict the coronavirus. The developer recently put out a message after the game had a forced removal on the Chinese App store “We have some very sad news to share with our China based players. We’ve just been informed that Plague Inc. “includes content that is illegal in China as determined by the Cyberspace Administration of China” and has been removed from the China App Store. This situation is completely out of our control.”

On top of that, this week the 99 cent game is in the top 5 paid iPhone apps.

Number 4: Resident Evil 2 (Remake)

The game is set in Raccoon City two months after the events of the first Resident Evil. Most of the citizens have been turned into mindless creatures, referred to by survivors as zombies, due to an outbreak of a viral bioweapon known as the T-Virus. This game was a rebuild of the original from the ground up and was for many one of the best games of 2019. The 3rd game is also getting the makeover treatment and is due for release in April 2020.

Number 3: Days Gone

When a virus causes a large portion of humanity to become uncontrollably violent, Deacon, his wife Sarah, and his friend Boozer attempt to flee for safety and escape the carnage. Sarah is stabbed and critically wounded, forcing Deacon to evacuate her on a National Emergency Response Organization (NERO) helicopter. Due to the helicopter being at capacity, Deacon stays behind with Boozer, intending to reunite with Sarah.

Number 2: A Plague Tale: Innocence

One of the best games of 2019 that doesn’t get nearly enough coverage. Set in 1348, Amicia de Rune is a young girl of noble descent while hunting with her father Robert in the forest, Amicia encounters signs of a blight. After their home is invaded Amicia and her ill brother Hugo flee to a nearby village, where they learn that hordes of ravenous rats have been spreading Bubonic plague and devouring anything they come across.

Number 1: The Last of Us

2013 gave us the absolute gem of an action-adventure survival horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The story follows Joel & Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us has hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures that are infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus.

Wait.. “Cordyceps fungus”? That name is way to similar to COVID-19 or Cornavirus for my likeing.. so i think I’ll just go play Mario Kart instead.

Do you have a favourite game we may not have mentioned that is set in a viral outbreak? let us know in the comments.
