Meta have just announced the release date of their latest mixed reality device the Meta Quest 3 and it’s coming sooner than you think.
The new VR device is thinner and lighter than the Quest 2 and has a new look with three pill-shaped camera modules up front, and built with a stronger focus on AR (augmented reality) rather than just being a VR (Virtual Reality) device.
AR will take the real world as you see it and add virtual digital content to it. Using full colour passthrough and depth perception sensors to create a seamless relationship between the real and virtual worlds.
The device can understand the space and objects in your environment. An example given is in the Stranger Things game where portals to the dark dimension of the Upside-down open up in your walls and creatures come through, or you can bounce a virtual ball off of your wall and it then bounces off the table, the floor and a bookstand in your real environment.
Imagine building virtual LEGO seamlessly in your mixed reality living space and then watching it come to life, this is the future of gaming that is virtual and tactile.
There’s also new and improved hand tracking meaning you can put the controllers down and use the device through gestures, even scrolling like a virtual tablet.
The hand grips now have haptics that will also improve the interaction of your gameplay experiences, plus Xbox Game Pass Cloud gaming has been announced to be available from December this year.
Through X Stadium you can now watch live sports like Basketball with a feeling you are sitting courtside.
Productivity is also coming to Quest as they get ready to launch Windows 365 and Microsoft 365 meaning you can use your device like a PC handling your spreadsheets, writing documents and other work focused applications.
The clear vision is thanks to dual 2064 x 2208 pixel displays compared to the Quest 2’s 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, and it’s the first product to ship with a second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset making it double the GPU processing power of its predecessor.
The new Meta Quest 3 starts at $799 for the 128gb version in Australia and ships with a free copy of fantasy game Asgard’s Wrath 2, you can pre order now and it ships as early as October 10.
