It feels like the world’s worst-kept secret as the industry has been buzzing around the fact that any day Nintendo would be dropping a trailer for its new console, the successor to the Switch.
The welcome reveal arrived overnight that we are getting a “Nintendo Switch 2” and it will be in 2025.
The device is keeping a very similar form factor to its predecessor if only slightly larger and now with magnetically connecting joycons which is a really great idea.
The magnets would have to be fairly powerful to hold them in place but also allow you to remove them when you want, so I think it would be similar to the way a DJI action camera uses the magnetic lock with its tripod accessories.

Even the dock is rounder-edged and sleeker looking and they’ve decided to show it off with a pure grey design rather than the initial coloured options of the original switch. This highlights the left and right colour accent differences under the joysticks and on the side connectors.
The first look trailer also states that the device is indeed dropping this year and we can’t wait to see what games will drop at launch. Given they’ve decided to show Mario Kart on the screen during the trailer, let’s hope it is the rumoured “Mario Kart 9” because we’ve been playing versions of 8 for over 10 years now.

More details are coming on the Nintendo Switch 2, via Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 02.04.2025, which will air on Wednesday 2nd April.
Nintendo will also hold Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, where consumers can go hands-on with Nintendo Switch 2, in cities around the world, including Melbourne.
