2024 was pretty decent for gaming with some real surprises and as I reflect on what I’ve played and go through my devices, deleting like mad to create space for what is to come in 2025, I thought it was time to share my favourite games of the year.
This year features some action, adventure and platforming fun but for the first time ever, no sport. Fifa has been a constant for me over the years and even though I’m still sinking lots of hours into EA Sports FC 25 it simply just isn’t good enough to make my top 5 list for this year. I won’t go into to much depth here, it just isn’t as fun as previous years.
So in an unnatural countdown postition lets start at the number one spot, because I haven’t been quiet at all about how much I love this game. It is my game of the year and is a real throwback to classic 3D platformers. Given that it’s the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, it was a fitting tribute, so my number one game of the year is…
#1 Astro Bot
- Platforms: PS5
- About the game: This vibrant platformer has players guiding Astro through a whimsical universe to rescue his crew scattered across various planets. With engaging gameplay reminiscent of classic titles like Super Mario 64, it has quickly become a fan favourite, featuring innovative power-ups and immersive environments and even picked up the “Game of the Year” at the 2024 Game Awards.
#2 Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
- Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS5 (US Spring 2025)
- About the game: This action-adventure game allows players to step into the shoes of the iconic archaeologist in a first-person experience set in 1937. Players will explore global locations, solve puzzles, and engage in thrilling combat while uncovering a new story that captures the essence of the beloved film franchise. This game managed to create buzz about an iconic character in a way the last two films failed to.
#3 The Plucky Squire
- Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch
- About the game: Released on September 17, 2024, this unique action-adventure puzzle platformer follows Jot and his friends as they navigate both 2D and 3D worlds after being cast out of their storybook by the villainous Humgrump. The game features unique and inventive gameplay mechanics that allow players to manipulate the environment through clever wordplay and puzzles, creating an amazing blend of storytelling and action.
#4 Batman: Arkham Shadow
- Platforms: Meta Quest 3
- About the game: This VR game immerses players in the role of Batman as they explore Blackgate Prison during a chaotic “Day of Wrath” orchestrated by the Rat King. The game combines stealth, combat, and detective work with a focus on gesture-based interactions, allowing players to experience Gotham’s gritty atmosphere like never before. Batman Arkham Shadow has an engaging narrative and immersive gameplay that captures the essence of the series. The best VR games are great games first, they just happen to be in VR.
#5 Black Myth: Wukong
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
- About the game: My love of the TV Show “Monkey” as a kid and an interest in the tale of “Journey to the West” and other adaptions like Dragonball had me really interested in this game that is rooted in the Chinese mythology. As an action RPG is works really well, featuring impressive visuals and challenging gameplay. You play as the legendary Monkey King, navigating beautifully crafted worlds while engaging in intense combat against formidable foes.
So now as we make space on our hardrives for next year we can dream of the games to look forward to in 2025 including the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Doom: The Dark Ages and Grand Theft Auto 6 (who am I kidding, we all know that game is getting delayed to 2026).
Now please excuse me while I go continue my love/hate relationship with EA Sports FC 25.
