Saber Interactive, the studio behind “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2,” has reassured fans that its highly anticipated remake of “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” (KOTOR) for PS5 is still in development.
Originally announced in 2021, the project has faced significant challenges. Initially handled by Aspyr Media, the game was later transferred to Saber Interactive. Reports in late 2023 suggested production had been paused indefinitely. However, in March 2024, news emerged that Embracer Group had sold Saber Interactive to private investors, with the remake’s development set to continue under Saber’s leadership.
In April, Saber CEO Matthew Karch confirmed that the game was “alive and well,” though details remained scarce. Since then, updates have been minimal—until this week, when Karch reiterated to Game File that the title remains in development. However, he declined to share further specifics. A PR representative later clarified that Saber prefers to let Disney, the owner of the “Star Wars” IP, take the lead in discussing games tied to its beloved franchise, as noted by VGC.
Set 4,000 years before the events of “A New Hope,” the remake will retell the story of Darth Malak, a Sith Lord who has unleashed a relentless armada against the Republic. Malak’s campaign has left the Jedi Order fractured, with many Jedi Knights either defeated or swayed to his cause. Players step into the role of a Jedi tasked with traveling across the galaxy to rally the forces needed to face Malak and bring peace to the Republic.
The original “Knights of the Old Republic,” released in 2003, received widespread acclaim for its storytelling and innovative gameplay. A sequel followed in 2004, along with an MMORPG spin-off in 2011. Fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting news on how the remake will reimagine this iconic story for a new generation of players.
