If you grew up with a Game Boy strapped to your hand, you likely remember the pixelated obsession that started it all. Back in 1996, Nintendo released a modest little title that would eventually balloon into the most profitable entertainment franchise on the planet. From trading cards to Hollywood blockbusters, Pokémon is a Goliath that shows no signs of slowing down.
Now, as the series prepares to blow out 30 candles on its birthday cake, it’s giving us the ultimate hit of nostalgia.
A Return to the Kanto Roots
Over the weekend, it was officially confirmed that the beloved remakes Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are finally making the jump to modern consoles. Originally released on the Game Boy Advance in 2004 these titles took the original 151 Pokémon and the Kanto region we loved, added a splash of colour, and introduced the Sevii Islands to keep things fresh.
For the first time, Switch players will be able to experience these GBA icons without needing to hunt down an old cartridge on eBay for the price of a small car. The ports are set to drop on 27 February 2026, better known to the faithful as Pokémon Day.
Later this week, a dedicated Pokémon Presents showcase will air, and the rumour mill is working overtime. While we expect the usual updates on the Trading Card Game (TCG), new merch, and mobile updates for Pokémon GO, there is a a feeling for a Generation 10 announcement.
Industry insiders and “leakers” have been buzzing for months about the next mainline entry. With the franchise hitting such a massive milestone, fans are desperate for a glimpse of what the future looks like beyond the Kanto horizon. Will we see a new region?

The Pokémon Presents showcase is scheduled for Friday, 27 February. It’s the perfect way to kick off a year-long celebration of three decades of catching, battling, and training.
This week is shaping up to be a landmark moment in gaming history. Personally, I’ll be clearing my schedule, grabbing my Switch, and heading straight for Brock’s Gym the moment those GBA ports go live.
