Ghost of Tsushima – Review

In Ghost of Tsushima you play as Jin a member of a small samurai group that is protecting their island home of Tsushima from an invading Mongol army. It doesn’t go well for the small group and Jin is left as one of the few survivors and he sets out on a new mission of discovery and liberation that will test his Samurai code.

The game is very loosely based on the real history of feudal Japan and is an open-world action-adventure that is intensely atmospheric. The story creates a real tie to the main character and it feels like an instant classic that puts “Ghost of Tsushima” in the same category of games like “Zelda: Breath of the Wild” or even “Red Dead Redemption 2”.

As the story progresses you get a real sense that the creators must be massive fans of Japanese Samurai Films, There are hints of “Seven Samurai”, “Shogun Assassin” and even “Yojimbo”.  This especially is clear in the amazing combat system where you can take on enemies with your Katana to begin with and with other traditional weapons as the game progresses. 

The visuals are amazing, this game will be the last of the exclusives for the PlayStation 4 and will carry over to the Playstation 5 very nicely with it’s gorgeous forests where you see leaves falling from trees, or the flower filled giant fields that just allow you to get lost in the realism. The more you play in this world, the more you want to protect it from the invading hordes.

For years I’ve imagined what it would be like if they made an “Assassin’s Creed” game in feudal Japan and each time they announce a new one I’ve crossed my fingers in hope. Turns out it took a completely different company to create something from scratch that exceeded all my hopes and dreams for a game set in this amazing part of history.
