If you had told me ten years ago that my weekends would be spent debating the vocal range of animated K-pop stars while picking plastic tiger fur out of the carpet, I might have raised an eyebrow. But here we are in 2026, and at our house, the idea of LEGO Kpop Demon Hunters is just “Golden”.
As a dad to two daughters who are still currently obsessed with both the Netflix KPop Demon Hunters film and my ever-growing stash of LEGO bricks, today’s announcement of a multi-year partnership between the two is basically the Super Bowl of our household.
The Clumsiest Tiger in Bricks
The first set, launching in later this year, is teased to be Derpy. For those lucky enough to not have watched the movie forty-seven times, Derpy is the girls’ supernatural tiger protector who has a bit of a “situation” with his lack of thumbs.
LEGO’s teaser shows a brick-built blue paw knocking over a potted plant, and I can already hear my youngest giggling. The rumour is that it’s expected to be around 825 pieces. That is the “Goldilocks” zone for us, complex enough to keep them quiet for a few hours, but not so difficult that I’m the one doing all the heavy lifting at 9:00 pm on a Sunday.
The “Smart Brick” Revolution: A Dad’s Best Friend?
What has me, the resident “Master Builder” (according to my coffee mug) really intrigued is the talk of LEGO’s new Smart Play technology. We’ve been hearing about these Smart Bricks since CES, and the idea of integrating them into the KPop Demon Hunters line would be a stroke of genius.
Imagine this: a brick with a built-in speaker and motion sensor tucked inside Derpy’s torso.
So every time my girls accidentally tip Derpy over (recreating his signature movie move), the Smart Brick could trigger a cheeky tiger “purr-growl” or a sound effect of breaking pottery.
The bricks can recognize Smart Tags. If we place Rumi or Mira near the stage, the Smart Brick could kick off the chorus of “Golden.”
It’s exactly the kind of tech that makes the girls feel like the movie is actually coming to life in our living room, without me having to hand over an iPad, which always seems to need a charge just when we need it.
The Great Minifigure Standoff
Of course, it wouldn’t be a LEGO release without a bit of controversy. My eldest daughter is already firm on her stance for sets: she wants Minifigures. “They’re classic, Dad!”
My youngest? She’s Team LEGO Friends Minidolls. She wants the more realistic proportions and the high-fashion hairpieces to match the girls’ Oscar-worthy outfits.
Personally, I’m just hoping they include a brick-built version of the Saja Boys so we have some villains for our “demon-hunting” sessions and we all know “Soda Pop” is the best song.
LEGO has kept us waiting, nearly a year since the film’s massive 500-million-view debut on Netflix which judging by the lack of official merch, even took them by surprise. Let’s hope they’ve used that time to get the details right.
