Did “Star Wars Unlimited – Twilight of the Republic” Manage to Suck Me Back In?

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I used to play some deck-building trading card games…

The Star Wars Unlimited competitive trading card game continues to impress with its third set, Twilight of the Republic. This expansion brings the Clone Wars era to life, introducing 257 new cards and exciting mechanics that enhance the game’s depth and strategic possibilities. I was sent the two-player starter to see if it could entice me back into playing these games since I haven’t touched one since Magic The Gathering back in the day. I’ve got to say, “I’m back baby!”

New Leaders and Mechanics

The set introduces iconic characters like Ahsoka Tano and General Grievous as new leaders, each with their own unique playstyles. Ahsoka’s deck focuses on the new Coordinate keyword, which activates powerful effects when you control three or more units. This encourages players to build and maintain a strong board presence, creating an engaging tactical challenge.

General Grievous, on the other hand, utilizes the new Exploit keyword. This mechanic allows players to sacrifice weaker units to play stronger ones at a reduced cost, reflecting the expendable nature of the Separatist droid army.

Token Units

Twilight of the Republic introduces token units to Star Wars Unlimited, adding a new dimension to gameplay. These units function similarly to regular cards but are removed from the game when defeated or returned to hand, offering interesting strategic options and synergies.

Starter Set and Accessibility

The Twilight of the Republic starter set continues the game’s commitment to accessibility. It includes two pre-constructed 50-card decks, token units, health chips, and play mats with clear labels for board layout and turn phases. This comprehensive package allows new players to jump right into the action while providing a solid foundation for learning deck-building principles. I really needed this to “soft-launch” back into playing after so long.

Expanded Card Pool and Synergies

With over 250 new cards, Twilight of the Republic significantly expands the game’s card pool. New units like Anakin Skywalker (5/6 Ground Unit with Coordinate) and the Hailfire Tank (7/6 with Exploit 2) showcase the set’s powerful additions and potential for exciting combos.

Visual Appeal and Theme

Twilight of the Republic captures the essence of the Clone Wars era with its artwork and card designs. If you are a fan of the animated series like me then you will appreciate the attention to detail in representing familiar characters, vehicles, and locations.

Final Thoughts

Twilight of the Republic solidifies in my mind what I’d been told of Star Wars Unlimited’s position as a robust and engaging trading card game. The mechanics of Coordinate and Exploit add strategic depth without overwhelming complexity, while the introduction of token units opens up fresh gameplay possibilities.

The set’s strong thematic ties to the Clone Wars era, combined with its well-designed starter product and support for various play formats, make it an excellent entry point for new players and a must-have for existing fans. I learnt to play with a friend who hadn’t played anything for a while as well and the game mechanics were quite easy to understand so we could play as quickly as possible.

As Star Wars Unlimited continues to evolve, Twilight of the Republic demonstrates the game’s potential for long-term growth and excitement. With its blend of accessibility, strategic depth, and thematic richness, this set is poised to captivate both casual and competitive players alike.
