Apple Vision Pro is Impressive But Out of Reach

Apple may have announced the “Apple Vision Pro” today, but it’s the lack of vision on the price that has left us all with a disappointed groan.

In a highly anticipated announcement, Apple revealed its entry into the virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) market with the introduction of the Apple Vision Pro. This groundbreaking device marks Apple’s first entirely new product category in almost a decade, signaling the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation.

During a keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to introduce the Apple Vision Pro to an enthusiastic audience. The headset, set to launch in early 2024, promises to deliver an unparalleled immersive experience that seamlessly combines the real and virtual worlds.

We were even excited when Disney CEO Bob Iger joined Cook on stage, adding a touch of magic to the event. Iger praised the Apple Vision Pro, referring to it as “real-life magic” and highlighting the immense potential it holds for transforming the entertainment industry. He also announced that Disney+ would be available on the Vision Pro on the day of its launch, enabling users to experience their favourite Disney content in groundbreaking ways.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the Apple Vision Pro, a captivating sizzle reel was showcased during the presentation. The clip depicted users fully immersed in an NBA game, stepping into episodes of Marvel’s “What If” series, and even bringing parades into their own homes. Iger expressed his enthusiasm for the headset, stating that it would enable Disney to deliver unprecedented experiences to its fans.

Impressive Look at the Apple Vision Pro

One of the standout features of the Apple Vision Pro is its ability to control the level of immersion. The headset is equipped with a dial that allows users to adjust how much of the real world they can see, ranging from minimal to full immersion. This feature provides users with the flexibility to choose their preferred level of engagement, making the device suitable for various applications and user preferences.

Superstar Youtube Tech Guru Marques Brownlee got hands on with the device and gave his first impressions in this video. Like all his videos it’s worth a watch.

Additionally, the Apple Vision Pro boasts a cinematic mode, which transports users to virtual theatres or real-world locations. With 4K resolution, high dynamic range (HDR) support, spatial audio, and stereoscopic 3D capabilities, the headset offers a visually stunning and sonically immersive experience.

Apple’s foray into the VR mixed reality market with the Apple Vision Pro demonstrates the company’s commitment to revolutionizing the way we interact with technology. By seamlessly merging the virtual and real worlds, the Vision Pro opens up a world of possibilities for entertainment, gaming, education, and beyond. It’s early days and the announcement has happened now so that developers can rush to get apps ready ahead of its 2024 release.

But as impressive as this new device is, it’s the price tag will put it out of reach for the mass consumer market a whopping $3,499US That’s over 5k in Aussie money. In comparison, the recently announced Meta Quest 3 is a more reasonable $829.99AU and growing into Meta from Oculus they are certainly more established in the framework of portable VR. Meta also recently released the Meta Pro which is only around $1700.

The price really feels out-of-touch with the cost of living crisis we are currently experiencing, but this is a first generation product from a company that has built a “must have” and aspirational reputation with it’s consumers. Time will tell if they have simply priced themselves out of the VR market but it certainly is exciting for anyone interested in the world of Virtual Reality and the big players in technology emprace the medium and get ready to go head to head.
